Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man suspected of killing conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, has been charged with aggravated murder, according to police documents, as President Donald Trump has called on Utah to consider the death penalty.

Charging documents obtained from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office by conservative commentator Steven Crowder Friday showed, in addition to aggravated murder, Robinson has been booked on felony obstruction of justice and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury.

The charging documents described the circumstances that led to Robinson’s arrest:

On the evening of September 11, 2025, a family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend, who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them, or at least implied that he had committed the incident. This information was relayed to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and scene investigators at UVU, and it was also conveyed to the FBI.

Investigators reviewed additional video footage from UVU surveillance and identified Robinson arriving on campus in a gray Dodge Challenger at approximately 8:29 a.m. on September 10. He was observed on video wearing a plain maroon t-shirt, light-colored shorts, a black hat with a white logo, and light-colored shoes. When investigators later encountered Robinson in person in Washington County in the early morning hours of September 12, he was observed wearing clothing consistent with the surveillance images.

Investigators also interviewed a family member of Robinson, who stated that Robinson had become more political in recent years. The family member referenced a recent incident in which Robinson came to dinner, prior to September 10, 2025, and during the conversation. with another family member, Robinson mentioned that Charlie Kirk was coming to UVU. They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints he had. The family member also stated that Kirk was “full of hate” and “spreading hate.” The family member further confirmed that Robinson owned a grey Dodge Challenger.

Investigators identified an individual as Robinson’s roommate and conducted an interview. The roommate stated that Robinson had made a joke on Discord. When investigators asked to see the messages, the roommate opened the application, showed them several exchanges, and allowed investigators to photograph the screen. The images included messages between a contact saved as “Tyler” (with an emoji icon) and the roommate’s device.

The messages attributed to “Tyler” included references to retrieving a rifle from a drop point, leaving the rifle in a bush, visually monitoring the area where the rifle was hidden, and wrapping the rifle in a towel. Additional messages referred to engraving bullets, a mention of a scope, and the rifle being “unique.” Messages also indicated that Robinson had changed outfits.

Based on the evidence detailed in this statement, I believe there is probable cause that Tyler Robinson committed the crime of aggravated murder by shooting Charlie Kirk in a circumstance that placed many around him at grave risk of death. Further probable cause exists for the charges of felony discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice for moving and concealing the rifle believed to have been used in the shooting.

In Utah, people convicted of the capital felony of aggravated murder can face life in prison with or without parole, or the death penalty.

During an interview with Fox & Friends Friday, President Donald Trump expressed his desire to see Utah pursue the death penalty for the murder of his friend and supporter, saying, “The governor is very intent on the death penalty in this case, and he should be.”

Following Kirk’s heinous public execution, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) reminded reporters the death penalty was still an option in his state, and noted prosecutors were preparing affidavits to pursue capital punishment.
