Mitch McConnell is stalling the SAVE Act, which would introduce national voter-ID rules, by refusing to schedule a vote on the Senate floor.
The bill cannot move forward until a vote takes place.
Republicans have reacted with fury to McConnell’s behaviour.
Rep. Tim Burchett posted an angry video to X on Friday in which he questioned McConnell’s mental function.
“He’s blocking the SAVE Act, or is he? Is it him or a staff member, because as you know, he’s a lot like Joe Biden was in his last few days in office, or last years in office,” Burchett said.
“His cognizant level is diminishing daily.”
Burchett said a number of elderly members of Congress were being managed by staffers because they lacked the capacity to manage their own affairs. He cited the example of Kay Granger, the former House Appropriations Committee chair who disappeared in 2024 and months later was found to be living in a nursing home.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also had choice words for McConnell on X, saying he was “disregarding” the will of the American people.
McConnell has voiced strong opposition to attempts to introduce ID laws for national elections.
In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece last year, he said such rules would give a future Democrat administration the ability to “use more sweeping mandates to carry out a complete federal takeover of American elections.”
“The current administration has better ways to spend its time than laying the groundwork for a leftwing election takeover.”
