President Trump is considering a tariff rebate for ordinary Americans, as his signature economic policy rakes in tens of billions of dollars a month.
Speaking to a press gaggle before he boarded Air Force One, President Trump was asked by Breitbart News about the possibility of a rebate.
The President responded that, although reducing the nation’s debt is the first priority, he is open to the idea of a rebate.
“Well, we’re going to pay down debt. We have a lot of money coming in, much more money than the country’s ever seen, by hundreds of billions of dollars. And there could be a distribution or dividend to the people of our country,” Trump said.
“I would say, for people that would be middle-income people and lower-income people, we could do a dividend, but one of the things we’re going to be doing is reducing debt. We have hundreds of billions of dollars pouring into our country now. We should have done this many years ago.”
Trump first suggested a tariff rebate a few weeks ago, while speaking to reporters before his trip to Scotland.
Last month it was announced that US customs duties had exceeded $100 billion in a single month thanks to Trump’s tariff policy.
Revenue from President Trump’s signature tariffs is now contributing significant amounts of revenue for the US treasury, making them the fourth largest source of federal revenue.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hailed the figures and said they showed Trump’s tariff agenda is working for America.
“As President Trump works hard to take back our nation’s economic sovereignty, today’s Monthly Treasury Statement is demonstrating record customs duties – and with no inflation!” Bessent said.
On Tuesday, the President said “the big money” would start to flow into US coffers when he imposed higher levels of reciprocal tariffs on trading partners from 1 August.
Trump announced 50% levies on copper goods and imports from Brazil, and a 35% tariff on Canadian goods.
Secretary Bessent has suggested US tariff collections could rise to $300 billion by December.
Two weeks ago, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the US is aiming for a 10% tariff baseline.
“You should assume that the small countries, the Latin American countries, the Caribbean countries, many countries in Africa, they will have a baseline tariff of 10 percent,” he said.
