Image Credit: Facebook, 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) A covert US Army unit dedicated to influencing public opinion through psychological warfare operations released a recruitment video last month, referred to as “chilling.”
The video, released by the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) headquartered in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, tells potential recruits that wars are not only fought kinetically but through words.
“We are everywhere. Words are our weapon. ⚡We are Psychological Operations⚡,” the group captioned the video on Facebook last month.

The 1:17-second video features imagery from the group’s previous “Ghost in the Machine” recruitment campaigns, as well as archive footage illustrating some of PSYOP’s methods of manipulating public opinion.
“There’s another force applied in combat that we generally don’t think of as a weapon of war. That weapon is words,” a narrator states, adding, “Words are weapons. … This is psychological warfare.”
The video features a dancing ghost from the 1930s cartoon, “Swing You Sinners!” displayed on a burning CRT TV, as well as images of leaflets being dropped from airplanes over crowds, and even shows a meme of Pepe the Frog in a clown suit, implying PSYOP soldiers may be engaged in meme warfare.

The bizarre video, concluding with the directive, “JOIN PSYOP,” is intended to attract the perfect candidate, described by the Army as an inquisitive, unorthodox thinker.
“Experts in persuasion and influence, PsyOp soldiers don’t often fit the mold of an average Army recruit,” the Army wrote in an article last year. “There are similarities to be sure, but a PsyOp candidate must meet a few additional requirements to excel in the specialty. These individuals live and think outside traditional norms, and recruiting efforts need to meet them through non-traditional means.”
U.S. Army Special Operations recruiting officer Master Sgt. Matthew Johnson added, “The ideal (PsyOp) candidate is one who is very cerebral and analytical…They are people who can dive into creative problem solving.”
The News and Observer claimed the video was well-received on social media, noting Instagram reactions ranging from people saying the video “goes hard,” to another saying, “I think y’all have so much fun at work! Would love to be on the other side of this ‘fog show.'”
