Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was visibly uncomfortable when CNN’s Jake Tapper attempted to confront her about comments made by President Donald Trump accusing her of congressional insider trading.
The incident happened Wednesday as Tapper attempted to throw to a video of Trump discussing Republicans’ congressional stock trading ban, nicknamed the PELOSI (Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments) Act.
“This afternoon, President Trump mentioned you, and he made an allegation about your investments. I want to roll that clip and then give you a chance to respond,” Tapper told Pelosi.
The clip, however, failed to play, prompting Tapper to read a transcript of Trump’s comments, saying, “I seem to be having some sort of… Yeah, let me just read what he said. I’m sorry that we had some sort of technical issue.”
“Nancy Pelosi became rich…” Tapper began, before Pelosi interrupted him.
“Why do you have to read that?” she asked, begging him to discuss another topic like the 60th anniversary of Medicaid.
Pelosi next denied the accusations as “ridiculous,” and claimed she supported the bill.
“He’s always projecting. And let’s not give him any more time on that,” she argued.
Tapper’s confrontation came as Trump on Wednesday called for an investigation into Pelosi’s purportedly illicit stock trading activity, saying, “She has the highest return of anybody, practically, in the history of Wall Street.”
Sen. Josh Hawley’s (R-Mo.) latest iteration of the PELOSI Act was introduced on July 30, passing out of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee with an 8-7 vote.
“Americans have watched politicians earn a fortune using information not available to the general public while the average family struggles to get by. It’s just wrong,” Sen. Hawley said in a statement. “Members of Congress should be focused on delivering results for their constituents, not returns on investments. It’s time to find out where members stand. It’s time we restore trust in Congress and ban all members from trading and holding stocks.”
Despite introducing the PELOSI Act, Trump fired off a Truth Social post targeting Sen. Hawley Wednesday, blasting him for siding with Democrats to block a review of Pelosi’s stock trading history, calling him a “pawn” helping Democrats.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted Trump had spoken with Hawley after the exchange, and slammed Pelosi during Thursday’s press briefing, saying her “stock portfolio grew 70%—in ONE YEAR.”
