A top Berlin police official has confirmed that the power outage terror attack on Berlin, which police believe was committed by a left-wing terror group, has claimed at least one life.
According to Berlin Police Vice President Marco Langner, who spoke during a press conference, an 83-year-old woman was found inside her apartment with severe hypothermia.
“This relative had already cared for her for months and then found her alive in the apartment. She was then resuscitated –unfortunately unsuccessfully– in the ambulance and subsequently died,” said Langner.
“Regardless of the possible cause of death, this is of course a very regrettable – very regrettable for the relatives – incident,” said the police chief. “The colleagues of the criminal investigation department who arrived at the scene could not immediately determine that the cause of death was caused by a fall.“
The fact that the police are now confirming that one death is tied to the blackout could raise the stakes for any criminal investigation. Already, the Vulkangruppe (Volcano Group), which claimed responsibility for the attack, has been active since 2011 with major terror attacks on Berlin energy infrastructure.
Their latest attack in the southwest of Berlin left 45,000 households without power, along with 2,200 businesses. Also affected were retirement homes, daycares, and schools.
Numerous commentators and journalists are now criticizing the government and security services for failing to stop this terror group.
