Attempted Ronald Reagan assassin John Hinckley Jr. said he was shocked to learn the latest attempt on President Donald Trump’s life occurred at the same location where he also tried to kill a US president.

Speaking to TMZ, Hinckley commented it was “spooky” the attempted assassination that unfolded over the weekend at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton “took place at the same hotel as mine did.”

In March 1981, Hinckley – inspired by the movie “Taxi Driver” – joined a gaggle of reporters outside the hotel and managed to fire shots at President Reagan following an event, hitting Reagan in the chest with a ricocheted bullet that lodged in his lung and critically wounding Press Secretary James Brady.

Hinckley commented on the reported lack of security at Saturday’s event, recalling there was also lax security when his shooting took place.

Via TMZ:

To illustrate his point, Hinckley described what happened back in ’81 when he showed up at the hotel to shoot Reagan. He said back then, the security was “lax” too … because he was able to sneak into a crowd of reporters waiting outside the hotel for Reagan to exit after delivering a speech. He said Secret Service agents never checked whether he was a reporter during their sweeps.

If they had, Hinckley said he would have bolted because he was not a journalist, had no press credentials and his devious plot would have likely been exposed. As a result, history might have turned out very differently.

The attempted assassin called on the hotel to stop hosting events “because bad things keep happening,” adding that “it’s just not a secure place to hold big events.”

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity in his 1982 trial. Press secretary Brady died 33 years later in 2014, with a medical examiner ruling his cause of death homicide from complications resulting from the shooting, which left him permanently brain damaged, unable to speak clearly and partially paralyzed.
