An expectant mother birthed her child on a plane traveling from Jamaica to New York City over the weekend.
The mid-air arrival unfolded aboard Caribbean Airlines Flight BW005, which took off from Kingston and landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on Saturday night.
“We have a passenger, a pregnant passenger, who’s going into labor at this time. Requesting direct detail,” a pilot informed air traffic control (ATC) at JFK.
ATC asked if the pilot would like medical personnel awaiting the plane’s arrival, to which he replied in the affirmative.
“Tell her she’s got to name it Kennedy,” ATC jokingly told the pilot.
“Kennedy it is. Will do,” he responded.
The mother and child “were attended to by medical personnel and are receiving the necessary care,” the airline stated in a press release.
“Caribbean Airlines also confirms that no emergency was declared during the flight.”
Pregnant passengers are welcome to travel on Caribbean Airlines flights without medical clearance through the end of their 32nd week of pregnancy and with clearance between weeks 32 and 36, but are not accepted from week 36 onward.
No information about the mother has been made public at this time.
On Jan. 20, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order entitled, “Protecting the meaning and value of American citizenship,” which would effectively dismantle birthright citizenship if implemented.
The order was promptly challenged in a class action lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union which is now being heard by the Supreme Court.
