At least 10 people have been injured in a shooting at Australia’s famous Bondi Beach.
Authorities were called to the beach at about 6.45pm in response to reports that multiple people had been shot.
Police have said that two men are in custody. They have provided no further details, including whether the attack was a targeted one.
Footage posted to social media shows two gunmen firing on the beach; emergency workers treating victims; and also a man disarming one of the gunmen, who then flees.
Robert Gregory, the CEO of the Australian Jewish Association, said members of the community told him the shooting targeted a Chabad event being held at the beach.
“This is an attack on the Jewish community deeply that pains us as a community,” he said.
Nitza Lostin told Kan, Israel’s public radio, she had been heading to Bondi Beach to attend a Hanukkah event.
“I know hundreds of members of the Jewish community were attending the event, and I was heading there too,” she said.
“The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement.
“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives.”
