Greene posted a long video on social media explaining her decision.
“I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” she stated.
“And in turn, be expected to defend the President against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me.
“It’s all so absurd and completely unserious. I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”
Greene continued, saying she had “fought harder than almost any other elected Republicans” to get Trump elected, even though she had serious disagreements with the administration in “a few areas.”
“Loyalty should be a two way street and we should be able to vote our conscience and represent our district’s interest because our job title is literally, ‘Representative.’”
Last week, President Trump withdrew his back for Rep. Greene and said he would back a different Republican candidate in the upcoming Georgia primary, as the ongoing spat between the President and one of his closest allies in Congress deepened.
Trump blamed the falling out on his warning to Greene that she shouldn’t run for senator or governor.
“It seemed to all begin when I sent her a Poll stating that she should not run for Senator, or Governor, she was at 12%, and didn’t have a chance (unless, of course, she had my Endorsement—which she wasn’t about to get!),” Trump stated.
“She has told many people that she is upset that I don’t return her phone calls anymore, but with 219 Congressmen/women, 53 U.S. Senators, 24 Cabinet Members, almost 200 Countries, and an otherwise normal life to lead.”
Trump also said that all Greene did was “COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN” despite his “creating Record Achievements for our Country.”
The main public source of disagreement has been the Epstein files, whose release Greene had been calling for for months.
On Wednesday, President Trump signed into law a bill to release the files. He had accused the Democrats, in concert with certain Republican lawmakers, of using the files as a “hoax” to distract from the shutdown and his administration’s achievements.
