The British government is set to reveal plans to house migrants in military bases rather than hotels.
Newly appointed Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, Britain’s first Muslim Home Secretary, is expected to reveal the plans in the coming days.
The move comes after the British government overturned a High Court ruling preventing the Bell Hotel in Epping from housing migrants. The hotel has been at the center of popular protests against the government’s policy of using hotels and private accommodation to house thousands of migrants.
Home Office lawyers successfully argued that the rights of migrants trumped those of local residents. Judges at the court of appeals ruled that siding with the protesters risked emboldening further protests.
Epping Council appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, but had its case rejected with “no reasons given.”
On Mahmood’s first day in office, 1,096 migrants arrived in Britain in boats.
A source close to Mahmood told The Telegraph: “Her position is going to be ‘nothing is off the table’.
“Bringing down net migration and tackling illegal migration is one of the public’s key priorities and it’s one of our key priorities,” another source told the newspaper.
“Shabana’s appointment is significant. It shows how seriously Keir takes securing our borders.”
