More than a dozen illegal aliens from Russia and Central Asia were apprehended in waters near Puerto Rico this week.
On Sunday afternoon, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) identified and tracked a suspicious 41-foot sailboat in the Caribbean Sea.
CBP AMO officers, working alongside the U.S. Coast Guard and Puerto Rican law enforcement, interdicted the vessel near Combate Beach in Cabo Rojo and escorted it to the Michel unit for further inspection.
Onboard, authorities encountered 13 foreign nationals who did not possess documentation allowing them to legally enter U.S. territory.
They were identified as 10 citizens of Uzbekistan, two citizens of Russia, and one citizen of Kyrgyzstan.
“This successful interdiction demonstrates the unwavering commitment and vigilance of the Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit in protecting our nation’s borders,” said Caribbean Air and Marine Branch Director Christopher Hunter.
“By intercepting this vessel before it reached Puerto Rico’s shores, we have once again upheld the integrity of our maritime security and ensured the safety of our communities. We remain steadfast in our mission to deter and disrupt illegal maritime activity.”
The aliens were transferred to custody of Homeland Security Investigations for further processing.
