China Sanctions 20 American Defense Companies & Execs For Selling Weapons To Taiwan

Since most American defense companies don't do much business with China in the first place, the move is being seen as largely symbolic and retaliation for a recent U.S. arms sale to Taiwan.

China announced sanctions on Friday against 20 U.S. defense companies and 10 senior executives due to the American firms selling arms sales to Taiwan.

Some of the U.S. companies listed by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs are Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, Boeing’s St. Louis branch, L3Harris Maritime Services, Epirus, Teal Drones, Inc. and  Lazarus Enterprises Inc.

The Chinese foreign ministry said the U.S. defense companies’ assets in China will be frozen and that China-based organizations and individuals can no longer do business with the American firms or executives.

An $11bn Trump-approved weapons sale to Taiwan earlier this month was cited as the catalyst for Beijing’s decision.

The CHICOMs stated, “The United States recently announced its large-scale arms sales to China’s Taiwan Region. This seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués, interferes in China’s internal affairs, and undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Pursuant to Articles 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 15 of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Countering Foreign Sanctions, China hereby decides to take countermeasures against the following U.S. military-related companies and senior executives:”

China maintains Taiwan must merge with the People’s Republic of China, but America and Taipei oppose the concept.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement on Friday, “The Taiwan issue is the core of China’s core interests and the first red line that cannot be crossed in China-US relations. Any provocative actions that cross the line on the Taiwan issue will be met with a strong response from China,” and suggested the US to stop its “dangerous” attempts at providing arms to Taiwan.

Since most American defense companies don’t do much business with China in the first place, the move is being seen as largely symbolic and retaliation for the arms sale to Taiwan.

China’s sanctions go into effect Dec. 26th.
