Speaking with Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) on Tuesday, CNN anchor Jake Tapper played hardball and refused to accept the representative’s lies about her party refusing to reopen the government.

Asked if she believes the Democratic senators from her home state of New Mexico should vote to open the government so Americans can get their SNAP funds, which are set to be unavailable starting November 1st, Stansbury immediately blamed the Trump White House.
“Let me be clear, the administration is choosing to starve American children with money they already have appropriated,” the Democrat politician stated, adding, “This is a choice by the White House.”
Tapper responded, “Okay, but this is also a choice by Senate Democrats to not vote to open the government.“
“No, it is not,” Stansbury asserted, with the CNN host quickly retorting, “Yes it is! I understand why they’re doing it. They’re doing it because they want Medicaid funds restored. They’re doing it because they want Obamacare premiums to be extended past the end of the year. I understand their reasoning.”
Stansbury then explained she’s upset because the money for a SNAP contingency plan “is sitting there,” accusing the White House of “withholding funds from children to have food.”
When Tapper noted the contingency cash would only give SNAP recipients food for another few weeks, the congresswoman tried to paint him as unsympathetic, saying, “It may not be a big deal to you but it’s a big deal to the grandparents that literally are feeding their children to not have money in those accounts…”
“My point is that it’s a short-term solution,” Tapper interjected, with Stansbury snapping, “It doesn’t matter! At the end of the day, people need to be able to feed their families, and Saturday is when those funds run out.”
The CNN reporter then asked, “If you feel so strongly, why not ask the Senate Democrats from New Mexico to vote to open the government so that the SNAP funds,” before being cut off by the irritated House rep.
The New Mexico representative claimed she IS trying to get the government reopened despite repeatedly refusing to call on her Senate colleagues to pass a spending bill, and again attacked Republicans as the group that doesn’t want “to make sure Americans are fed.”
Meanwhile, prominent politicians such as Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), the second most senior member of the House Democratic Caucus, have openly admitted they’re using the suffering of American families as “leverage” against the Trump administration.
