A 21-year-old congressional intern was shot dead on the streets on Washington, D.C. this week, just days after Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) warned about rampant violence in our nation’s capital.

The horrifying incident unfolded at around 10:30 p.m. on Monday night just one mile from the White House.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to gunshots in the Third District and found Eric Tarpinian-Jachym unconscious at the scene.

He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries hours later.

Investigators believe Tarpinian-Jachym was struck by a stray bullet when multiple suspects emerged from a vehicle and opened fire on another group.

An unidentified adult female and 16-year-old male were also shot and but are expected to survive.

MPD has recovered the vehicle involved but the suspects remain unidentified and potentially still on the loose, according to the latest available updates.

Tarpinian-Jachym was interning for Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS) and was a well-regarded senior at the University of Massachusetts.

Rep. Burchett recently sounded off dangerous conditions in the sanctuary city, saying he avoids leaving Capitol Hill after dark.

“I worry about tourists, especially at night. There are a lot of cool things to go see at night, but I would caution against that,” Burchett told Border Hawk during an interview last month.

“It’s a constant worry of mine. I try not to leave the campus at night. It is not a safe town.”

During a recent Congressional hearing on crime and insecurity, D.C. officials insisted their jurisdiction was safe — just as a violent carjacking unfolded in broad daylight near the Capitol grounds.

On March 28, President Trump issued an executive order entitled, “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful.”

“It is the policy of the United States to make the District of Columbia safe, beautiful, and prosperous by preventing crime, punishing criminals, preserving order, protecting our revered American monuments, and promoting beautification and the preservation of our history and heritage,” the order states.
