A police officer was shot while responding to a mob attack at an immigration detention center in Texas over the weekend, according to authorities.
The disturbing incident unfolded on Friday night at the ICE Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado.
More than a dozen masked suspects “dressed in black” reportedly launched fireworks and damaged vehicles and security cameras in the parking lot “in an apparent effort to lure law enforcement,” sources told CBS News.
“Officers responded to the scene and observed a suspicious person that appeared to be carrying a firearm. As the first responding officer attempted to engage the person, multiple suspects opened fire on the Officer,” the Alvarado Police Department (APD) explained in a statement.
The wounded officer was flown Harris Methodist Hospital in Ft. Worth for treatment and is now recovering at home.
APD reportedly arrested at least eight suspects, some of whom were wearing body armor, but no further information has been released.

“We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the USAOs and our law enforcement partners,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on Saturday.
“The Department has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible.”
