Dem Leaders Continue Fight against Voter ID Rules, Despite 70% of Dem Voters Supporting Them

Democrat leaders refuse to budge on their opposition to federal voter-ID rules, despite more than two-thirds of Democrat voters supporting them.

A survey shows that 83% of US adults support a requirement for some kind of government-issued photo ID to vote: 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans.

And yet, during an interview with MS NOW last week, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer labelled plans for federal voter-ID rules, “Jim Crow 2.0.”

Schumer was referring to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which has already cleared the House and, if passed, would require proof of citizenship in order to vote.

The Democrats are expected to use the filibuster to block it in the Senate.

“I called it Jim Crow 2.0, and the right wing went nuts all over the internet. That’s because they know it’s true. What they’re trying to do here is the same thing that was done in the South for decades to prevent people of color from voting,” Schumer said.

Schumer added that it would disadvantage women who get married and change their name and people who have lost their birth certificates.

Sen. Adam Schiff echoed Schumer, claiming the SAVE Act’s provisions were “another way to simply suppress the vote.”

“It’s still going to be something that disenfranchises people that don’t have the proper real ID, driver’s license ID, that don’t have the ID necessary to vote even though they are citizens,” he said.

A few Democrats, including Sen. John Fetterman, support the SAVE Act.

President Trump has been a strong supporter of the SAVE Act, calling it the “SAVE AMERICA ACT.”

“I am asking all Republicans to fight for the following: SAVE AMERICA ACT!” Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday.

“1. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW VOTER ID (IDENTIFICATION!).

“2. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP TO REGISTER FOR VOTING. 3. NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS (EXCEPT FOR ILLNESS, DISABILITY, MILITARY, OR TRAVEL!).”
