The governor’s letter accused ICE of not targeting the “worst of the worst” criminals as promised, but rather targeting “Black and Brown people, including U.S. citizens and those who have not been charged with crimes.”
Pritzker also referred to an ICE operation in Chicago last weekend where agents deployed teargas while apprehending suspects in an area where a Halloween parade was set to take place and children were present.
Regarding the ICE raid, the governor claimed agents “endangered the lives of innocent community members and traumatized children,” calling the incident “unacceptable and unAmerican” before requesting DHS “suspend enforcement operations from Friday, October 31 to Sunday, November 2 in and around homes, schools, hospitals, parks, houses of worship, and other community gatherings where Halloween celebrations are taking place.”
“Illinois families deserve to spend Halloween weekend without fear. No child should be forced to
inhale tear gas or other chemical agents while trick or treating in their own neighborhood,” Pritzker wrote. “We have heard from teachers, parents, and other caregivers that children are anxious. Even in these difficult times, they should be able to trust that they are safe – if only for one weekend.”
United States District Judge Sara Ellis of Illinois decided after a Tuesday hearing that she’ll be meeting Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino daily from Wednesday until Nov. 5 to ensure agents are not “out and about on Halloween where kids are present and tear gas is being deployed.”
Meanwhile, ICE arrested one illegal alien and issued a detainer for another after they were allegedly involved in a deadly crash that killed an Illinois county board member and his wife just last week.
An ICE spokesperson said a detainer the agency lodged with the Clark County Jail “was ignored due to Illinois sanctuary policies.”
“The jail did not cooperate with ICE due to sanctuary policies, and yet, despite this, our ICE officers waited for his release and arrested Morales-Martinez outside of the Clark County Jail on October 27,” the immigration official stated.
