The Department of Justice under the Trump administration announced on Thursday that U.S. Special Forces soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke was arrested for allegedly betting on Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro being removed from office just before participating in the American raid on Maduro’s compound.

According to the DOJ, Van Dyke bet $30,000 on Polymarket that Maduro would be ousted and raked in $400,000.

FBI Director Kash Patel commented on the arrest, writing on social media, “This involved a U.S. soldier who allegedly took advantage of his position to profit off of a righteous military operation. Thank you to our agents, Intel teams, and great partners at The Justice Dept who protected our war fighters. Investigation ongoing.”

President Trump was asked about the incident, saying the soldier was comparable to Major League Baseball legend Pete Rose because they both bet on their own teams.

POTUS asked, “Was he betting that they would get him or wouldn’t get him?” with a reporter responding, “He was betting on his removal from office.”

“That’s like Pete Rose betting on his own team,” the president replied.

Van Dyke was officially charged with unlawful use of confidential government information for personal gain, theft of nonpublic government information, commodities fraud, wire fraud, and making an unlawful monetary transaction.

The soldier used “sensitive classified information” to place the bet after he “participated in the planning and execution of the U.S. military operation to capture Nicolás Maduro, called ‘Operation Absolute Resolve,’” using “his access to classified information about that operation to personally profit.”

“Our men and women in uniform are trusted with classified information in order to accomplish their mission as safely and effectively as possible, and are prohibited from using this highly sensitive information for personal financial gain,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.  “Widespread access to prediction markets is a relatively new phenomenon, but federal laws protecting national security information fully apply.”

Describing the charges, the DOJ said the soldier is facing “three counts of violating the Commodity Exchange Act, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison; one count of wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison; and one count of an unlawful monetary transaction, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.”
