A suspect accused of killing a married couple in an Arkansas crash is a fugitive who is in the U.S. illegally, Gov. Sarah Huckabee has confirmed.

The horrifying tragedy unfolded just after noon on Mar. 26 in Benton County.

Michael Cordes, 70, and his wife Freda, 67, were riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycle through an intersection in their home city of Rogers when a Chevy Tahoe driven by Jose Luis Gamez turned left into their path, according to charging documents.

The Cordes were both killed in the collision, while Gamez emerged unscathed.

Gamez, 35, was arrested and charged with two counts of negligent homicide, driving while impaired, and improper entry or exit at an intersection.

Authorities discovered Gamez also had an active nationwide felony warrant out of Los Angeles County, California, for charges that have not been made public.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer for Gamez, an illegal alien of undisclosed origin.

“This tragedy was entirely preventable. Our Troopers acted swiftly to apprehend a dangerous individual who should never have been on Arkansas roads in the first place. We remain committed to protecting Arkansans and working to ensure violent offenders are identified, detained, and removed from our communities,” said Arkansas State Police Director Col. Mike Hagar.

Gov. Huckabee blasted Democrats for blocking funding to the Department of Homeland Security amid an ongoing budget battle in Congress.

“Every day that Senate Democrats delay funding for DHS is another day that immigration officials cannot operate at full capacity and apprehend the violent, criminal illegals hurting our communities,” she said.

“I’m grateful to Arkansas State Police for arresting this criminal and thankful that President Trump is working quickly to deport violent, criminal illegals. This is why I signed the Defense Against Criminal Illegals Act last year: to get these violent offenders off our streets and out of our country.”

Illegal alien drivers continue to destroy American lives on a near-daily basis.
