Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced she will not be seeking the governorship of California, leaving her available to mount another presidential run in 2028.
“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor,” Harris – dubbed “America’s wine mom” during the 2024 election – said in a statement posted to X.
“I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.“
The defeated Democrat, however, left the door open for a second possible presidential bid.
“For now, my leadership-and public service-will not be in elected office,” Harris wrote. “I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans.”
Harris’ announcement comes as California prepares to elect a new governor next year during the midterms, as current Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) reaches the end of his two consecutive terms.
Fox News reports: “The announcement reconfigures the 2026 Democratic primary field, potentially clearing the way for candidates like Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to mount less encumbered campaigns.”
Harris made a lackluster appearance at a Voters of Tomorrow Summit last Friday, delivering a keynote speech in a pre-recorded video that lasted less than two minutes.
It remains to be seen whether Harris or Newsom attempt to run for the Democrat presidential nomination in 2028.
