The man arrested for the murder of Charlie Kirk was “pretty left on everything,” according to a friend of his, who said his radicalization began in high school.
Tyler Robinson’s friend spoke anonymously to The Guardian and said Robinson was “pretty left on everything,” and was “the only member of his family that was really leftist.”
“the rest of his family was very hard Republican,” the friend added.
The friend described how Robinson had begun adopting more extreme leftist positions during his sophomore year at high school and said he would “always be ranting and arguing about them.”
The friend said he was shocked by Robinson’s arrest.
“I knew he had strong political views, but I never thought it would even go near that far.”
He described how he and Robinson had slowly fallen out of friendship by the end of high school, and said they had not spoken in years.
The friend also shed light on some of the inscriptions on shell casings found at the scene of the crime, saying that one of the inscriptions—a series of arrows—was a reference to the game Helldivers 2 and signified “calling in a big bomb that exists… called the 500 kilogram.”
Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed the inscriptions in a Friday morning press conference announcing Robinson’s arrest.
“Inscriptions on the three unfired casings read, ‘Hey, fascist! Catch!’ Up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol, and three down arrow symbols. A second unfired casing read, ‘Bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao.’ A third unfired casing read, ‘If you read this, you are gay, LMAO.’”
A casing that had been fired carried the inscription, “Notices bulge OWO what’s this,” which is a reference to a well-known meme associated with the “furry” subculture, where individuals dress up in furry animal costumes.
Kirk, 31, was murdered at a Turning Point USA event in Utah on Wednesday. His suspected killer, Tyler Robinson, is now in custody.
Although authorities have not described a motive for the killings yet, evidence from the scene, including the shell casings, suggests a clear leftist political motivation.
