Two people have been taken to hospital following a knife incident in the Calder area of Edinburgh, prompting a major emergency response and the lockdown of nearby schools.
Police Scotland said officers were called to reports of a man with a bladed weapon on Calder Gardens at around 8:25am on Monday, March 2nd. Firearms officers were deployed as part of the response, alongside paramedics and specialist units.
Authorities later confirmed that two individuals were injured and transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.
Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy said the situation has now been “contained” and is not being treated as terror-related. “There is not believed to be any wider risk to the public,” he stated, adding that officers would remain in the area while inquiries continue.
The suspect is believed to have retreated to an 11th-floor flat in Cobbinshaw House, where armed police established a cordon. Images from the scene showed multiple police vehicles outside the tower block, with firearms officers entering the building. Paramedics wearing protective equipment were also in attendance.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes in the residential neighbourhood. Two local men told media outlets they saw a man carrying two knives, allegedly stained with blood, shortly after the incident began. One said the suspect approached him outside a shop with his hands behind his back before revealing the weapons. The witness claimed he confronted the man using a spirit level obtained from a bystander and attempted to prevent the suspect from moving toward a nearby school.
Unconfirmed reports suggested the suspect may have entered and damaged a local shop. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show smashed bottles and goods scattered across the floor. According to The Scottish Sun, the knifeman “tried to get into a nursery” before stabbing two people.
As a precaution, Wester Hailes High School was placed in lockdown. Edinburgh City Council said nearby council buildings, including schools and early years centres, were temporarily closed following police advice.
Reports on X, citing online videos and photos, suggest that the attacker is an African migrant.
