During the outage, Waymo robotaxi vehicles caused huge traffic jams because they had trouble navigating with traffic lights down.
Tesla driverless cars reportedly had no trouble with the outage.
As of Monday morning, around 10,000 residents remained without power, according to Pacific Gas & Electric’s outage tracker.
The San Francisco Fire Department says a fire at a PG&E electric facility substation was the cause of the outage.
“The damage from the fire in our substation was significant and extensive and the repairs and safe restoration will be complex,” PG&E said, noting there were no injuries during the blaze.
Regarding the Waymo debacle, the company said service returned late Dec. 21, explaining, “While the failure of the utility infrastructure was significant, we are committed to ensuring our technology adjusts to traffic flow during such events. We are focused on rapidly integrating the lessons learned from this event.”
The incident highlights how fragile society is in major cities due to dependence on electricity.
