On Sunday, a previously unreported incident that unfolded last summer was brought to light after authorities upgraded the case to a homicide investigation.
On July 13, Santiago Ajsac Sirin was sitting on a metal tree guard near a Manhattan shelter where he was living when he was ambushed by four male suspects, two of whom have been identified as Fritzgens Delia, 32, and Lavel Boddie, 32.
“Boddie allegedly punched Asjac Sirin in the face, knocking him back and causing his head to strike the metal tree guard,” the New York Daily News reports, citing prosecutors.
“Delia then punched him in the head about seven times while Boddie rummaged through the victim’s backpack, prosecutors charge.”
Asjac Sirin was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors performed emergency brain surgery, but he reportedly remained “neurologically unresponsive.”
After more than three months in a medically-induced coma, Asjac Sirin passed away on Oct. 22 at the age of 36.
Delia was arrested four days after the attack at the same shelter where Asjac Sirin had been living, according to information obtained by Viral News NYC.
Boddie was arrested on Aug. 4 while living at another homeless shelter in Brooklyn.
“According to sources, Delia has been in and out of the city’s shelter system for years. He reportedly had a long shelter stay beginning in December 2019, left in August 2023, and returned in July 2024. Boddie had been staying at the Kingsboro STAR shelter for approximately three months, from June 2025 through September 2025,” Viral News NYC reports.
Both men were charged with assault and attempted robbery and are being held at Riker’s Island.
It is currently unclear if their charges will be upgraded.
An announcement made by Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs shortly after the attack indicates Asjac Sirin may have been a citizen of the Central American country.
An investigation is ongoing.
