On Thursday the Kremlin revealed what it seeks from President Donald Trump’s peace summit as Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky announced weapons deals Kiev has secured from European backers seeking to support Ukraine’s wartime activities.
Russian news reported on Moscow’s announcements, citing Kremlin aid Yury Ushakov:
Regarding the agenda, it is “obvious” that the central issue in the talks will be the Ukraine conflict, Ushakov said, adding, though, that “broader objectives of ensuring peace and security will also be addressed, as well as current and most acute international and regional issues.”
There will also be an exchange of views “regarding the further development of bilateral cooperation, including in the trade and economic spheres,” Ushakov noted, adding that such ties have “enormous and, unfortunately, still untapped potential.
Kiev kicked off Thursday by bombing Russian cities, followed by a meeting set to take place in London between Zelensky and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The European Conservative reported on the importance of the Ukrainian / British meeting:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Thursday, August 14, ahead of a key U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin will meet on Friday, August 15th, at an air base in the far-northern U.S. state. With such high stakes, all sides were pushing hard in the hours before Friday’s meeting.
Zelensky, who has refused to surrender territory to Russia, spoke by telephone on Wednesday, August 13, with Trump, as did European leaders who were not invited to the meeting. The participants voiced confidence afterwards that the U.S. leader would seek a ceasefire rather than concessions by Kyiv.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Zelensky is now prepared to negotiate a territorial swap, countering a defiant social media rant by The Dictator on Saturday.
Zelensky revealed future weapons procurement deals he recently acquired from European nations, setting the stage for a Ukraine which won’t have to give up in peace.
Our new defense-support PURL initiative with partners is already bringing tangible results. As of today, we already have $1.5 billion pledged. Through the NATO Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List initiative, NATO members can cooperate to purchase U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine – a mechanism that truly strengthens our defense. So far, the Netherlands contributed $500 million, a joint pledge from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden – $500 million, and yesterday Germany added another $500 million. That’s a very real boost, and I thank Germany for this important step. We continue to speak with other nations. Every contribution under PURL is a direct investment in our ability to defend our people’s lives and bring a dignified peace closer. I thank all our allies for standing with Ukraine.
