California Governor Gavin Newsom has a 22% chance of winning the 2028 presidential election, according to prediction company Polymarket.
The prediction comes after Newsom made comments suggesting he is seriously considering a run for the presidency.
On Sunday, Newsom was trailing JD Vance, who led with 29%.
Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez trailed with 8%, followed by President Trump, who is widely believed to be constitutionally ineligible, with 4.3%.
Newsom made the comments on Sunday during an interview with CBS.
He was asked if he had given the idea of running for president “serious thought.”
“I’d be lying otherwise,” he said.
Newsom’s term as governor ends in 2027, and term limits in California prevent him from running again.
He added that he is “looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment.”
Newsom’s profile has risen significantly since Donald Trump returned to the White House and the Democrat party struggles to find direction and leadership.
“I don’t know what the party is,” Newsom told The Hill.
“I’m still struggling with that.”
Newsom has offered constant pushback against the new Trump administration, especially its policies of mass deportation and of federalizing National Guard units to restore order in cities like Los Angeles and Washington DC.
Newsom recently signed into law legislation designed to prevent federal immigration officers from wearing masks while carrying out their duties in California, a move which drew stinging rebukes from the White House and accusations the Governor was deliberately trying to intimidate and endanger federal agents.
