George Zinn, the 71-year-old man who was initially arrested at Utah Valley University after the assassination of Charlie Kirk has now been charged with obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony. Zinn admitted to police that he was attempting to “draw attention from the real shooter.”
“Documents filed in Zinn’s case by UVU campus police allege that he began screaming, ‘I shot him – now shoot me,’ in the immediate aftermath of Kirk’s killing at Utah Valley University (UVU) on 10 September. Video of officers holding Zinn down was widely circulated online, leading some to believe that authorities had quickly arrested a suspect in the killing of the conservative political activist,” The Guardian said.

“Then, when asked by an officer where the gun used to kill Kirk was, Zinn allegedly replied: ‘I am not going to tell you.’ Police contend that Zinn subsequently admitted that he was not the shooter and did not know who was – and he purportedly claimed that he had acted how he did to draw attention away from the real killer in hopes of becoming ‘a martyr’ for Kirk,” The Guardian said.
Not confirmed yet but it appears as though the terrorist who shot Charlie Kirk is George Zinn. He has a previous charge for threatening to bomb the Salt Lake City Marathon back in 2013. https://t.co/A16ZU9Qyec pic.twitter.com/WEtoWeSEM6

When Zinn was taken to a hospital after the initial arrest he told officers that he was “glad he said he shot the individual so the real suspect could get away,” according to law enforcement documents.
On Monday Zinn was booked into Utah County Jail for investigation of obstruction of justice and sexual exploitation of a minor.
FBI investigators interviewed Zinn at the hospital. Zinn reportedly admitted he wasn’t the shooter, but that he “uses (his) phone to look at child sexual abuse material” after initially refusing to let law enforcement look through the device.
The investigators looked through the phone and discovered multiple images containing children believed to be approximately 5-years-old, according to the affidavit. FBI agents informed deputies of this discovery. The deputies then reviewed the phone and found more than 20 images of child pornography in addition to explicit messages about sexual acts.
In 2013 Zinn was charged with terroristic threats for an email he sent to a marathon race saying that he could help set up bombs at the finish line. Notably, this threat was made just days after the Boston Marathon bombings.
“A man who prosecutors say asked Salt Lake City Marathon organizers if he could help set up bombs at the finish line now faces a criminal charge,” news site KSL reported in 2013. “George Hodgson Zinn, 59, told investigators ‘he didn’t mean anything’ by sending an email to the marketing director of the marathon asking, ‘I was wondering if you needed anybody to help place bombs near the finish line on Saturday???,’ according to court documents. But Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said given the level of concern around the country following the bombings at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured 170 earlier that week, all allegations are taken seriously.”
Zinn previously made a video discussing the 9/11 attacks.
