During a Monday press conference, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to a question about Pope Leo XIV recently suggesting “God does not listen to the prayer of those who wage war,” in reference to calls for Americans to pray for military members fighting overseas.
Pope Leo said on Palm Sunday, “This is our God… A God who refuses war… who does not listen to the prayer of those who wage war.”
Leavitt answered, “I think our nation was a nation founded 250 years ago almost on Judeo-Christian values, and we’ve seen presidents, we’ve seen the leaders of the Department of War, and we’ve seen our troops go to prayer during the most turbulent times in our nation’s history.”
“I don’t think there is anything wrong with our military leaders or with the president calling on the American people to pray for our servicemembers and those who are serving our country overseas,” she added, saying, “It’s a very noble thing to do and servicemembers will tell you they appreciate the prayers and support from the commander-in-chief and from his cabinet.”
Regarding Leavitt’s claim that the U.S. was “founded on Judeo-Christian values,” the 𝕏 Community Notes feature stated, “Thomas Jefferson called Judaism a ‘bloodthirsty, cruel’, and ‘remorseless’ religion whose God was ‘vindictive, capricious and unjust.’ He disliked how they ‘punished children’ for ‘the sins of the fathers.’ He found no utility in a religion that didn’t believe in an afterlife.”
