Within a week of the Nepalese government banning social media sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, 𝕏 and YouTube for refusing to comply with regulations, young citizens violently revolted and forced several politicians to resign.

Multiple buildings were set on fire, including the Nepalese Congress Party’s central office and the former prime minister’s house, killing ex-PM Jhalanath Khanal and his wife Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar as they were trapped in the home by rioters.

The presidential palace, prime minister’s residence and a building housing prime minster offices and several ministries were all torched.

A video being widely spread online reportedly shows angry citizens chasing down and attacking Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel.

The riots came after 19 demonstrators were killed Monday and a curfew order was declared for Tuesday.

NYT reporter Bhadra Sharma writes, “Two airports have been damaged, as have the Hilton and Varnabas hotels.”

The Indian Express reports, “The social media ban is emblematic of the larger churn in Nepal. The youth, especially, are increasingly frustrated with the same set of 70-plus leaders, all facing corruption allegations, coming in and out of power since the country became a democratic republic in 2008.”

According to the Kathmandu Post, “Protesters set fire to the house of Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung, pelted stones at the residence of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Biswo Paudel and attacked the house of former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.”

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid the chaos but the revolt continued, with politicians being attacked and government buildings set on fire hours after the resignation was announced.

“President Ram Chandra Poudel, the ceremonial head of state, appealed to the protesters to engage in dialogue to find a peaceful resolution and stop further escalation. The army also issued a statement calling for calm and urging political dialogue,” AP reports.

Time will tell how the revolution shakes out.
