Russian intelligence agency the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has issued a statement on Monday which claims that the ongoing civil unrest in Serbia is European Union-backed, and that the bloc seeks to overthrow the Serbian government in a similar fashion to the overthrow of Kiev in 2014.
“The unrest in Serbia, with the active participation of young people, is largely a product of the subversive activities of the European Union and its member states. The goal of the European liberal mainstream is to bring to power in this largest Balkan country an obedient leadership loyal to Brussels,” the statement said. “The ultimate goals of the Eurobureaucracy have not been achieved. The main reasons for this are strong patriotic feelings, the unifying influence of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and the memory of the NATO aggression, which resulted in the disintegration of the country (the secession of Kosovo).”

Police late on September 5 used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse anti-government protesters in the Serbian city of Novi Sad after several thousands of them rallied seeking early elections. The demonstration was another in a series of student-led protests held across the Balkan country after a fatal collapse of the Novi Sad train station roof last November. The tragedy, which killed 16 people, was widely blamed on entrenched corruption with protesters’ demands for a transparent investigation growing into calls for snap elections. The demonstrations, that piled pressure on President Aleksandar Vucic, mainly passed off peacefully. But in mid-August they degenerated into violence from what protesters said was heavy-handed tactics by government loyalists and police. According to Moscow, the media narrative behind stoking unrest is Western funded.
“The focus is on ‘brainwashing’ Serbian youth and promoting the so-called ‘bright European future’. According to the data obtained, through non-governmental organizations linked to Brussels, Serbian news portals FoNet, RAM, Vreme, Južne vesti, Slobodna reč, Bum 93, Podrinske, Frimidija, SOinfo, FAR, Storiteler, as well as the non-governmental organization Link, receive significant financial support,” the SVR statement said.
Russian news detailed the event that kicked off the unrest in late 2024:

The incident triggered public backlash, with activists accusing the government of corruption and demanding accountability. The list of demands later expanded to holding snap elections and the resignation of President Aleksandar Vucic.
The latter has branded the protesters “terrorists” seeking to “bring down the state”under foreign influence. In response to public pressure, the Serbian authorities also agreed to some concessions, including the resignation of several ministers and the publication of documents related to the Novi Sad canopy collapse.

Moscow’s intel agency claimed the “Euro-elite” is ready to use the November 1 anniversary of the roof collapse “to turn the situation in its favor.”
“However, the false promises of European officials about ‘soon entry into the blooming European garden’ are just bait. The price for this increasingly weak perspective will have to be paid in conquests and the memory of ancestors. The European Union does not need a proud and united Serbian people,” Russian intelligence officials conclude.
