Seven men are facing murder charges in connection with a crash-and-grab theft operation at a Louis Vuitton shop in Chicago this week, according to reports.
The deadly chains of events unfolded just before 5 a.m. on Thursday on the Magnificent Mile.
A mob of masked marauders swarmed the luxury shop after ramming a pickup truck through the storefront, witnesses say.
The suspects snagged more than $500,000 in merchandise before fleeing the scene in at least six vehicles, CWB Chicago reports.
One getaway vehicle crashed into a Chicago police cruiser, leading to the arrests of two suspects while two more escaped on foot.
A Kia Stinger carrying five suspects collided with a small SUV, killing 40-year-old Mark Carlo Arceta.
Arceta was reportedly en route to his last shift at Northwestern Memorial Hospital before taking paternity leave to welcome his second child, who was born the next day, according to a GoFundMe campaign.
He leaves behind a 1-year-old daughter, newborn son, step-daughter, and partner.
“He had no reason to expect there would be a vehicle doing in excess of 80 miles an hour, running red lights, that struck his vehicle broadside and tragically killed him,” Alderman Brian Hopkins told WGN9.
“There was also a weapon recovered in the offender’s vehicle. It was a Glock with an extended magazine and an automatic switch. So, these offenders would have taken other lives if anyone else got in their way.”
Seven suspects were taken into custody, some of whom were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at local hospitals.
All seven have been charged with murder during the commission of a forcible felony, burglary, theft of merchandise valued between $500,000 and $1 million, and some are facing additional charges.
The driver of the Kia, 30-year-old Dejuan Wingard, has also been charged with reckless homicide with a motor vehicle.
Most of the suspects have significant criminal backgrounds, and several of them have been arrested in Chicago as adults five or more times.
“Keller McMillan, a 35-year-old anti-violence ‘peacekeeper,’ has three out-of-state fugitive warrants and an in-state warrant,” CWB Chicago reports, citing a law enforcement source.
The other suspects have been identified as Darius Bowdry, 30; Alton Jackson, 37; Harvey Fisher, 26; Anthony Hemphill, 22; Keith Perkins, 19.
An investigation is ongoing.
Last week, six suspects targeted a Rolex shop on the Magnificent Mile, making off with more than $260,000 of stolen watches before being arrested.
