Dash-cam footage released Tuesday shows the moment ICE agents in California opened fire on a vehicle after a suspect being detained attempted to evade arrest.

The incident unfolded Tuesday morning in Patterson, southeast of San Francisco, as ICE agents tried to arrest El Salvadoran suspect Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, who was reportedly wanted in connection to a murder.

Footage shows the man pulled over along a highway when his car lunges forward and hits a police vehicle, before he backs up prying open his passenger door on the truck behind him, as police draw their firearms and begin opening fire while he tries to escape, running over a median and forcing his hubcaps to roll off his tires.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said the incident was the result of a targeted stop, and that Hernandez is a member of the 18th Street Gang wanted in connection to a homicide in El Salvador.

“As officers approached the car, the wanted gang member weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over,” Lyons said in a statement. “Following their training, our officers fired defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and the public.”

He added, ā€œThe illegal alien was taken to a local hospital,” and that the FBI is investigating the matter.

The Washington Post reports the man is in critical condition.
