Image Credit: Maskot / Getty (LifeSiteNews) — The notorious Spanish serial killer Joan Vila Dilmé, nicknamed “the Angel of Death,” has been transferred to a women’s prison after identifying as a woman named “Aida.” The 60-year-old was sentenced to a 127-year prison term in 2014 after being convicted of 11 murders between August 2009 and October 2010. The killings were carried out at the care home he worked at in the Catalan town of Olot.
In 2013, Vila’s defense attorneys had claimed that his gender dysphoria had led to him feeling like “a woman trapped in a man’s body,” and presented him as a tortured individual who suffered from manic depression. Attorney Carles Monguilod initially attempted to claim that Vila’s murders were merely examples of merciful “euthanasias.”
His crimes, however, were brutal. “Vila told police that he had killed his first eight victims with either overdoses of insulin or a lethal cocktail of psychotropic drugs,” the press reported at the time. “The final three suffered agonizing deaths after they were forced to drink bleach or other corrosive fluids.” Vila’s victims were primarily elderly, helpless women, as well as two men.
There is evidence that he tortured some before murdering them. Between October 12 and 17, 2010, Vila murdered three elderly patients. He killed his last victim by injecting laundry detergent into her throat.

“Serving his sentence at Puig de les Basses prison in Figueres since his arrest in 2010, the killer has now adopted a new female name, with competing outlets claiming he is going by either ‘Aida’ or ‘Aura,’” Reduxx reported on April 15. “During their report, the mainstream Spanish paper referred to Vila in the feminine, and attempted to minimize any allegations that this was done in order to gain any special treatment, arguing ‘her transition does not entail any benefits related to her sentence.’”
“As of now, he has yet to undergo any surgical alterations, but reportedly has plans to do so. His ‘gender-affirming’ cosmetic surgeries will be paid for by Spain’s public healthcare system.”
Wikipedia has already altered its encyclopedia entry on Vila to refer to him as a female, and describes his crimes and conviction using female pronouns.
According to Spanish media outlets, Vila has already begun to change his appearance, and his “transition” costs could reach up to 80,000 euros (over $94,000). “The transfer and the start of the legal process have generated a strong social reaction, especially among the town’s residents, who are outraged at the possibility that the treatment will be financed with public funds,” noted the Public Mirror. Vila is considered to be the most prolific Spanish serial killer of the century.
