A male suspect who reportedly confessed to brutally murdering a cab driver in New York and then tossing his body into a reservoir is an illegal alien with prior arrests in the sanctuary state, federal authorities have confirmed.

On Dec. 1, family members of 66-year-old Aurelio Zhunio-Orbez reported him missing to police in Danbury, CT.

Zhunio-Orbez had been last seen at around 11:30 a.m. that day picking up a passenger at a train station in Brewster, NY.

On Dec. 7, a fisherman found Zhunio-Orbez’s body floating in the water at Croton Falls Reservoir.

The Toyota Sienna livery cab Zhunio-Orbez had been driving was stolen and later located near a Metro-North Railroad station in New Salem, NY.

On Dec. 12, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) arrested Santos Vasquez-Ramirez, 28, at his residence in Pawling, NY.

Vasquez-Ramirez confessed to murdering Zhunio-Orbez via strangulation, PCSO stated in a press release.

He was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

Vasquez-Ramirez reportedly told investigators that the killing was an act of retribution after the two men had squabbled over a fare during a previous ride.

“He drove him in the past,” Sheriff Brian Hess explained during a press conference. “The suspect states that’s what the reason for the fare dispute was, a prior taxi ride.”

Vasquez-Ramirez has been arrested at least three times in the past — twice for DUI and once for criminal mischief, Sheriff Hess stated.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has now confirmed that Vasquez-Ramirez is an illegal alien from Guatemala who entered the U.S. in 2013 and was issued a final order of removal in 2016 under the Trump administration.

Vasquez-Ramirez “should’ve never been in our country in the first place and provided the opportunity to gruesomely take the life of Aurelio Zhunio-Orbez,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told the New York Post.

“Open border policies have deadly consequences. ICE lodged a detainer with local authorities to ensure this criminal illegal alien is never allowed back into American neighborhoods. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, ICE is targeting the worst of the worst.”

Zhunio-Orbez, a legal immigrant from Ecuador, is survived by his four children and their mother, according to a tribute established in his memory.
