Four passengers were injured when a Syrian suspect wielding an ax and hammer launched an attack on a train bound from Germany to Austria this week, authorities say.
The disturbing incident unfolded just before 2 p.m. local time in the vicinity of Strasskirchen, a municipality in Bavaria.
German authorities have indicated that some of the victims may also be Syrian citizens who were traveling to Austria.
Bystanders intervened and managed to disarm the suspect, neutralizing him with his own weapon(s) until authorities arrived.
He has been identified as Mohammed A., a 20-year-old Syrian resident of Vienna with refugee status in Austria.
The victims ranged in age from 15 to 51 years old, authorities say.
“Based on what we know so far, he talked to them immediately beforehand,” said Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.
The injured were transported to local hospitals while passengers disembarked and were directed to other trains.
Authorities immediately ruled out “extremist” motives, but an investigation is ongoing.
