The harrowing chain of events unfolded on Wednesday morning in Newark.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was carrying out an operation targeting Christian Oswaldo Guevara-Guerra when he attempted to evade by using the van he was driving to ram federal vehicles, DHS explained.
Guevara-Guerra also struck several civilian vehicles, ultimately colliding head-on with an SUV.
One of the vehicles he hit was reportedly an Uber that was transporting three children to school.
Two 15-year-olds and a 12-year-old were hospitalized with serious injuries, officials say.
Guevara-Guerra, who was also hospitalized, was previously charged with receiving stolen property and was issued a final order of removal in 2017 but apparently remained in the U.S. for nearly a decade.
“Guevara’s callous and reckless attempt to evade arrest put American citizens in danger comes after sanctuary politicians held webinars on how to evade,” DHS stated.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was previously charged with trespassing during a controversial incident at the Delaney Hall immigration detention center, blasted federal officers and demanded they comply with local laws regarding law enforcement pursuits in the sanctuary city.
“Based on the damage they are inflicting on our communities, ICE has no business engaging in chases at anytime, anywhere — but especially in densely populated areas, and on roads still being cleared from a significant snowstorm,” Baraka said.
“ICE cannot come into our city and recklessly put innocent people in harm’s way while they try to apprehend their targets.”
Illegal aliens and radical leftists have become increasingly violent in their resistance to immigration law enforcement.
