On Monday President Donald Trump announced that he has cut Ukraine off from U.S. money. Previously, Washington directly funded Ukraine, but now it will be up to European nations and NATO to bankroll Kiev. Notably, NATO is set to hand Ukraine another $50 billion by the end of the year despite widespread proof of rampant money laundering.
“I don’t blame Ukraine… if they come and ask for a hundred billion dollars and they get it,” Trump said, going on to describe Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky as “the greatest salesman I think I’ve ever met.”
With funds now stemming from NATO (to which the U.S. is a member state), Washington will still be a source of some of Ukraine’s aid money, but not directly, as was the case previously.
“We don’t pay any money to Ukraine anymore. Do you know that? In fact, it’s the opposite. They request through NATO. We deal with NATO. We don’t deal really with Ukraine. NATO pays us in full and does what they want,” the President said.
Trump emphasized Washington will still play a supporting role in providing security guarantees to Kiev, but that European countries should take the lead.
“Zelensky and Western European allies have called for guarantees similar to “Article 5,” which would commit countries to respond collectively if Ukraine were attacked. Kiev has reportedly asked these partners to allocate $100 billion for the purchase of US-made weapons, according to reports,” Europe Transport Industry Today said.
Trump actually wants Ukraine to pay the U.S. back for the aid money via his mineral deal.
