Image Credit: ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS / AFP via Getty Images President Donald Trump on Tuesday drew clear battle lines distinguishing Republicans from Democrats, slamming Dems over their refusal to back voter ID laws and for supporting transgender surgeries for minors.
During his 2026 State of the Union address, Trump recognized a detransitioned teenage girl named “Michelle” who he said was being secretly transitioned by her school without her parents’ knowledge.
“And who can believe that we’re even speaking about things like this? Fifteen years ago, if somebody was up here and said that, they’d say, what’s wrong with him? But now we have to say it because it’s going on all over numerous states without even telling the parents. But surely, we can all agree no state can be allowed to rip children from their parents’ arms and transition them to a new gender against the parents’ will. Who would believe that? We’ve been talking about we must ban it, and we must ban it immediately,” Trump said.
At this point, Republicans stood to applaud; however, Democrats mainly stayed seated, which Trump quickly highlighted.

“Look, nobody stands up,” Trump stated. “These people are crazy! I’m telling you, they’re crazy.”
“Boy oh boy,” he continued. “We’re lucky we have a country with people like this. Democrats are destroying our country. But we’ve stopped it just in the nick of time, didn’t we?”
The “these people are crazy” attack line was so strong, Republican strategist Brad Todd said the GOP should double down on the mantra.
“That is the midterm strategy to hold the House. Swing voters know it. There is naturally energy against the president’s party in any midterm, but there is an opposition with a bar to clear,” Todd said, according to Washington Examiner, adding, “‘These people are crazy’ is the campaign Democrats should fear.”
In another point of the speech, President Trump blasted Democrats for refusing to endorse voter ID laws to prevent illegal aliens from voting, saying their refusal is due to the fact that they can’t win without cheating.
“[T]hey don’t want identification for the greatest privilege of them all: voting in America,” Trump said, noting snow shovelers in Zohran Mamdani’s New York City were being asked to provide two forms of identification to volunteer for the jobs.
“Both Republicans and Democrats overwhelmingly agree on the policy that we just enunciated. And Congress should unite and enact this commonsense, country-saving legislation right now. And it should be before anything else happens. And the reason they don’t wanna do it, why would anybody not want voter ID? One reason! Because they wanna cheat. There’s only one reason.”

“They wanna cheat. They have cheated. And their policy is so bad that the only way they can get elected is to cheat. And we’re gonna stop it. We have to stop it, John,” the president said, urging Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to whip up the votes to pass the SAVE Act.

Democrats, meanwhile, maintain Republicans are trying to “rig” the election by passing Voter ID laws.
Democrat Alex Padilla says that Republicans are "rigging" the elections by trying to pass Voter ID laws to ensure that only Americans vote in American elections.

Elsewhere during the SOTU, Trump took a potshot at former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as he announced his support for a bill that would ban Congress from insider trading.
