President Donald Trump on Monday posted letters announcing tariffs as high as 40% sent to several nations that refused to come to the bargaining table on trade.

Declaring the United States has “concluded that we must move away from these longterm, and very persistent, Trade Deficits,” the president gave leaders of each nation, including Thailand, Cambodia, Serbia, Bangaldesh and Tunisia, nearly identical letters announcing set tariff percentage rates aimed at balancing the disparities.

“Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from Reciprocal. Starting on August 1, 2025, we will charge Thailand a Tariff of only 36% on any and all Thai products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs,” Trump’s letter to the King of Thailand reads.

Myanmar and Laos were on the high end of the rates, each receiving letters declaring “a tariff of only 40%” on products sent to the United States.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan, Tunisia, Malaysia, Japan, and Kuala Lumpur each received a rate “of only 25%.” Other nations included Cambodia (36%), Serbia and Bangladesh (35%), Indonesia (32%), and Bosnia and Herzegovina and South Africa (30%).

“Please understand that these Tariffs are necessary to correct the many years of Thailand’s Tariff, and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers, causing these unsustainable Trade Deficits against the United States,” Trump letter to Thailand stated. “This Deficit is a major threat to our Economy and, indeed, our National Security!”

Trump went on to note the rates could rise if tariffs against the United States are increased, and similarly noted the rates could fall if the nations decide to negotiate.

“If you wish to open your heretofore closed Trading Markets ot the United States, and eliminate your Tariff, and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter,” Trump wrote. “These Tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your country.”

“Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The president’s announcements roiled markets, according to Zero Hedge.

“U.S. main equity indexes, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, fell to session lows after the Trump administration released tariff letters to a handful of countries, citing “persistent trade imbalances” and the failure to reach trade deals before the July 9 deadline. The tariffs are expected to take effect on August 1,” the outlet reported.
