The shocking incident unfolded just after 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in Manhattan.
The victim, a tourist from California, was shopping with her family at the flagship department store in Midtown Manhattan when she took her baby into a seventh-floor restroom, the New York Post reports.
While changing the child’s diaper, she was ambushed by a knife-wielding maniac who stabbed her several times in the back, shoulder, and arm.
The suspect was quickly taken into custody and the victim was rushed to a local hospital in stable condition.
Kerri Aherne, 43, was hit with attempted murder, assault, child endangerment, and weapons possession charges.
Hours prior to the rampage, Aherne was reportedly released from Manhattan Psychiatric Center after a year of treatment.
“She had purchased a knife at Macy’s and looked for someone to kill because voices in her head told her that she had to kill someone or else she would be killed,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Paul Barker stated in court on Friday.
Aherne was previously arrested in 2018 in her home state of Massachusetts for posting online about killing Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Barker told the court.
A defunct Facebook account apparently belonging to Aherne indicates she also had a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, as she frequently made negative posts about the President.
“Going a little insane,” Aherne wrote in July 2018.
Aherne was reportedly deemed medically incapacitated in 2019 and her mother and sister were appointed as her guardians.
“She was placed on a court-ordered treatment plan to keep her taking Prolixin, an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia,” the Post reports.
Aherne reportedly took an Uber to New York City while on release from a mental health facility in Massachusetts at some point in the past.
The victim, who is reportedly married to a California sheriff, was released from hospital on Friday and is recovering.
