President Trump has vowed to declare a national emergency in Washington DC after Mayor Muriel Bowser said she would withdraw all police cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The President announced his intention in a post on Truth Social today.
“The Federal Government, under my auspices as President of the United States of America, has stepped into the complete criminal mess that was Washington, D.C., our Nation’s Capital. Because of this, D.C. has gone from one of the most dangerous and murder ridden cities in the U.S.A., and even around the World, to one of the safest – In just a few weeks,” he said.
“The ‘place’ is absolutely booming, with restaurants, stores, and businesses packed and, for the first time in decades, virtually NO CRIME. It has been a beautiful thing to watch but, now, under pressure from the Radical Left Democrats, Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has presided over this violent criminal takeover of our Capital for years, has informed the Federal Government that the Metropolitan Police Department will no longer cooperate with ICE in removing and relocating dangerous illegal aliens.”
Trump continued by noting that if he allowed the Mayor’s plan to go ahead unchallenged, it would lead to a resurgence in crime, which is why tough measures are called for.
“If I allowed this to happen, CRIME would come roaring back. To the people and businesses of Washington, D.C., DON’T WORRY, I AM WITH YOU, AND WON’T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. I’ll call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!”
President Trump has made the use federal forces, including the National Guard and Marines, a central part of his law-and-order agenda, which has mainly targeted Democrat-run cities, including Washington DC.
Last month, President Trump deployed National Guard troops to the streets of the capital “to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.”
Thousands of troops from multiple states have now been committed to the effort.
Soldiers from West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio have joined members of the DC National Guard, as well as around 3,000 police officers from the Metropolitan Police Department and 500 federal law enforcement personnel.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump hailed the effects of his intervention in the capital.
“Carjacking in DC is down 87%,” he posted.
“ALL other categories of crime are likewise down massively since I got involved. DC will soon be a CRIME FREE ZONE, in only 14 days, far faster than scheduled. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
On Friday, it was announced that National Guard troops would be sent to Memphis, Tennessee, which has one of the highest crime rates in the US.
During his first term, President Trump sent federal agents to the said to aid in law enforcement.
The President also said he might send troops to New Orleans, another Democrat-run city, and he has threatened to send them to Chicago.
The Washington Post has also reported that preparations are underway to send 1,000 National Guard troops to Louisiana.
Reuters reports, “The Pentagon’s Louisiana plan suggests a robust operation is under consideration, with National Guard personnel ‘supplementing’ the law enforcement presence in high-crime neighborhoods. They could also help with drug interdiction and by providing ‘logistical and communications support’ to local authorities.”
