Joe Biden had to be shepherded back on stage by a handler in an embarrassing moment caught on hot mic.
Biden had just delivered a speech at the Nebraska Democrat Party’s “Ben Nelson Gala” in Omaha on Friday evening when a handler rushed forward to shepherd him back on stage, like a toddler gone walkies.
A hot mic caught the handler’s exchange with the former president.
“You’re going to stay on stage,” Biden’s handler said, taking him by the arm.
“I am? Oh,” Biden replied.
Handler: “You’re going out by the side.”
Biden: “Oh, alright.”
During his speech, the Biden condemned his successor for “deliberately making hunger worse for America” and accused him of taking a “wrecking ball” to the White House, the Constitution and the rule of law, at the same time as enriching his own family.
“The American people are sending a message, are sending the message—message to Trump and to his crowd,” Mr. Biden said.
“I just want you to know, you work for us, Mr. President. We don’t work for you.”
He reserved his harshest criticism for President Trump’s cuts to healthcare. Biden is currently undergoing treatment for metastatic prostate cancer.
“I think it’s immoral, it’s un-American, it’s flat out wrong. You have to ask yourself: Why? Why in God’s name are they doing this? Why? Well, I’ll tell you why. They give away an additional $4 trillion in tax breaks to the benefit of the wealthiest people in America.”
The speech was Biden’s first overt political intervention since leaving the White House in January.
Biden went on to say that America was in a difficult position, but hailed Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York election as “something very special.”
“Folks, look, this isn’t a golden age,” Mr. Biden said.
“The fact of the matter is that it is a very, very dark moment. But you know, the fact of the matter is, we’re in a situation where we had something very special happen just last Tuesday.”
Joe Biden has been largely absent from the spotlight since leaving the White House. In May, he sat for an interview with ABC’s “The View” in which he attempted to counter damning revelations about his physical and mental decline during his presidency.
In that same month, it was announced he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which raised further questions about his fitness to be commander-in-chief. Medical experts said it was impossible Biden developed the cancer after leaving the White House, and asked whether physicians knew while he was still president and whether the diagnosis was hidden from the public.
Last month, he had surgery to remove lesions from his forehead and began radiation therapy at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia.
