Image Credit: x screenshot Dallas police officers were filmed apprehending street preachers from the “Testimonies of God” ministry last week outside the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks stadium for “interference with public duties.”
The two men were sharing the word of God outside the American Airlines Center before being placed in handcuffs.
In the viral video, one preacher can be heard asking why he’s being detained and mentioning his friend being handcuffed for “asking questions” on public property.
One officer tried telling the individual filming the incident to go away, but the man pointed out he has the right to film on public property and the policeman backed down.
In an Instagram post, the ministry wrote, “Mavericks vs. Pistons, while the game was getting started and fans flooded to the arena, the Gospel went forth outside. We were arrested for preaching Christ on the public sidewalk, yet the Word of God was not hindered. Many souls heard. Many great Gospel conversations had, Bibles were given, and Christ was exalted.”
The Dallas Police department told Newsweek the group was using a loudspeaker in violation of the city’s noise ordinance.
“Both individuals could have been arrested, one for violating the noise ordinance and the other for Interference with Public Duties,” the department said. “However, officers ultimately exercised discretion,” by instead giving them citations and issuing criminal trespass warnings.
The ordeal sparked concerns about free speech and religious freedoms in the U.S.
