Speaking to “NBC Nightly News” anchor Tom Llamas inside the Oval Office, Trump said he’d agreed to withdraw 700 officers from Minnesota after state and local officials vowed to cooperate with federal deportation efforts and turn over criminal illegal aliens currently in jail.
Asked what Minnesota had taught him, Trump responded, “I learned that maybe we could use a little bit of a softer touch — but you still have to be tough.”

“We’re dealing with really hard criminals,” he continued, adding he’d had phone conversations with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D). “But look, I’ve called the people. I’ve called the governor. I’ve called the mayor. Spoke to ‘em. Had great conversations with them. And then I see them ranting and raving out there. Literally as though a call wasn’t made.”
Trump’s revamp of immigration efforts comes as White House border czar Tom Homan on Wednesday announced an immediate withdrawal of 700 federal officers from Minnesota citing “unprecedented cooperation” by local officials.

Homan insisted the administration was “not surrendering,” saying 2,000 federal agents would remain in Minneapolis and that a “complete drawdown” would be contingent on the level of cooperation the feds receive from state and local governments.
The full Trump interview is set to air at 6:30PM ET on NBC.
