Vice President JD Vance wouldn’t disclose what his advice to President Donald Trump was prior to the Iran war, saying the meeting was classified at the highest levels and that POTUS should be able to speak with staffers without fear of deliberations being leaked to the media.

The vice president was asked about his advice during a “lower prices, bigger paychecks” event in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on Friday, where a reporter questioned if he’d expressed opposition to the war similar to his previous sentiments.

“What did you advise the president initially as he considered his actions in Iran and what are you urging him to do now especially with Americans seeing higher prices at the pump and some of the fallout from that across the economy?” a reporter asked, adding, “Do you express any concerns like those you’ve expressed in the past on the possibility of these extended wars?”

“Imagine the situation,” Vance responded. “We’re in the situation room where you can’t even take your iPod in there, or your AirPods… You can’t take your iPhone in there. You can’t take
anything in there because it is the most classified space anywhere in the world.”

“And I sit there with Pete Hegseth and General Caine and Marco Rubio, and the entire White House team, and the President and I, and the entire senior team are talking about the options and about what we need to do and about how we must best protect the American people.”

“I hate to disappoint you, but I’m not going to show up here and in front of God and everybody else tell you exactly what I said in that classified room, partially because I don’t want to go to prison. And partially because I think it’s important for the President of the United States to be able to talk to his advisors without those advisors running their mouth to the American media,” Vance said.

Vance’s response comes as President Trump claimed he was at first hesitant to approve of the before ultimately giving his approval.

Asked at a press conference earlier this week if there had been a disagreement between him and Vance in regards to launching the Iran war, Trump replied, “I don’t think so, no, we get along very well on this. He was I would say philosophically a little bit different than me. I think he was maybe less enthusiastic about going, but he was quite enthusiastic, but i felt it was something we had to do. I didn’t feel we had a choice.

Vance was criticized for retreating from the spotlight after the war in Iran was launched nearly two weeks ago, with clips circulating on social media showing flashbacks from the campaign trail claiming Trump would avoid starting new wars.

Vance’s political fate is seen as inextricably linked to Trump’s foreign policy as he’s supposedly going to run for president in 2028.
