The United States plans to “go back to the moon” and establish moon bases, interim NASA Director Sean Duffy announced Tuesday.
President Trump’s Transportation Secretary revealed the plans during an interview with journalist Miranda Devine, saying the bases are part of a future Mars exploration mission.
“So everyone in America knows what the Apollo program was. You’re going to go to the moon,” Duffy said. “No one knows what the Artemis program is. We want to go back to the moon. We want to set up a base there. Keep people on the moon. And there’s actually that we have ice on the moon. It’s actually very real.”
“And then from there, what we learn will help us go to Mars.”
Duffy went on to discuss the challenges involved in bringing the Artemis project to fruition, including securing funding, building a new international space station, cutting red-tape and forging corporate partnerships to ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness.
