A woman convicted of manslaughter in the brutal killing of a Canadian tourist after he allegedly used a racial slur won a city council seat in Maine this week.
On Tuesday, voters in Bangor elected Angela Walker to represent them, overlooking her conviction in 2003 after she and her brother were found guilty of killing Canadian tourist Derek Rogers in Old Orchard Beach, for which she served 10 years in prison.

Walker was convicted 23 years ago in the brutal Old Orchard Beach killing of Derek Rogers, a Canadian tourist who had allegedly called her a racist name.
Cops found that Rogers had been severely beaten and then suffocated to death with sand forced down his throat.
His lifeless body was found on the beach on August 1, 2002, in a section of the popular coastal beach town known as Ocean Park.
Addressing her past, Walker told the Bangor Daily News, “That’s my past. I don’t live there anymore and I’m a different person.”
The election of Walker, who won as part of a slate of progressive candidates, despite her violent past comes as voters in Virginia also overlooked the violent rhetoric of Democrat Jay Jones, who was elected as the state’s attorney general Tuesday.
Texts from 2022 showed Jones joking about putting “two bullets to the head” of Republican then-Speaker Todd Gilbert.
