On Friday Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky announced he is working toward peace, but that he also supports the fighting which is currently taking place. The Ukrainian Dictator did in fact make a major concession toward peace on Thursday, stating that he will allow contested regions to hold a vote on joining Russia. Territory secessions are one of the main points holding up a peace settlement.
“The Russians want the whole of Donbass – we don’t accept that. I believe that the Ukrainian people will answer this question. Whether in the form of elections or a referendum, the Ukrainian people must have a say,” Zelensky told reporters Thursday.
Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov has responded by stating that regardless of how this referendum goes, certain eastern Ukrainian territories will be part of Russia.
Speaking to Kommersant business daily on Friday, Ushakov stressed that “whatever happens, this [Donbass] is Russian territory, and it will be under the control of our administrations, sooner or later.” He noted that Zelensky has so far opposed the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the region, despite this being among the US proposals for peace.
The Dictator said Friday that his goal is to bring an end to the conflict, “our goal is the same – to bring the war to a real conclusion and to define the steps that will make peace dignified for Ukraine.” He may have been responding to President Donald Trump’s Thursday statement that everyone in Ukraine loved the peace plan but Zelensky.
“In fact, other than President Zelensky, his people loved the concept of the deal,” Trump said Thursday. “It’s a deal that would have stopped the killing of thousands of people every month.”
Today, there have already been several briefings from Rustem Umerov on the work of our negotiating team. It has been quite an active day.
In Germany preparations are underway for the work of our military group focused on the details of security guarantees for Ukraine. Our group is led by Lieutenant General Hnatov; representatives of our army, intelligence services, and security forces are also taking part.
In the United States the group on economy, reconstruction, and investment has already begun its work this morning and will keep working to prepare a good outcome. On our end this group is led by Prime Minister Svyrydenko, Deputy Prime Minister Kachka, and Minister Sobolev with the participation of experts.
The third line of work consists of ongoing online contacts between National Security Advisers and all those brought in by the leaders’ decision. Today, as on almost every day, communication continues between the United States, Ukraine, European countries, and other participants of the Coalition of the Willing. On our side Rustem Umerov moderates these discussions.
Across all areas, our goal is the same – to bring the war to a real conclusion and to define the steps that will make peace dignified for Ukraine, with security and reconstruction – guaranteed.
