Zelensky Trashes Peace Talks: “We Don’t Have Time For All This S**T”

The Dictator has claimed that his decision to choose war over territory concessions is supported by his subjects.

As has been the case over the last year, the issue of territorial concessions has been the chief reason for the continuation of the conflict.

During the two-day peace negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, mediated by Washington in Geneva, Switzerland, Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky trashed the diplomatic effort and shut the door on civility.

“We don’t have time for all this shit. So we have to decide, and have to finish the war,” Zelensky said, referencing his hatred toward Russia’s top negotiator in Geneva, Vladimir Medinsky, who cited the historical causes for the start of the war.

Medinsky, who refrained from profanity in his summation of the peace process, described the trilateral meeting as “difficult but businesslike.”

The Russian official reported that Tuesday’s talks lasted six hours while Wednesday’s lasted only around two hours. The next round will be held in the near future, Medinsky said.

Rustem Umerov, the head of Ukraine’s delegation, said on Telegram that progress was made during the negotiations, yet declined to provide specific details. RT detailed his post:

The political and military working groups within the delegations “discussed security parameters and mechanisms for implementing possible solutions,” he said, describing the discussions as “intensive and substantive.”

“This is complex work that requires the agreement of all parties and time,” Umerov stressed.

The goal for the next stage of the trilateral talks is to work out concrete decisions that could be submitted for consideration to the leaders of the three countries, he said.

Zelensky took a less optimistic outlook of the peace effort, calling the Geneva summit insufficient:

As of today, we cannot say that the outcome of the meetings in Geneva is sufficient. The military representatives discussed certain issues seriously and substantively. However, sensitive political matters, issues of possible compromises, and the necessary meeting of leaders have not yet been sufficiently worked through.

We are counting on the next meeting, and it would be right for it to take place still in February.

As has been the case over the last year, the issue of territorial concessions has been the chief reason for the continuation of the conflict. In his profane interview with Axios Tuesday the Dictator expressed that his unwillingness to cede any territory to Russia was backed up by his subjects:

What he’s saying: In his 37-minute phone interview with Axios, Zelensky noted that Washington and Kyiv have agreed that any deal must be put to the Ukrainian people in a referendum.

If that deal involves the Ukrainian side simply pulling out of Donbas — sacrificing sovereignty and the citizenship of the people who live there — he believes it would be voted down.
“Emotionally, people will never forgive this. Never. They will not forgive… me, they will not forgive [the U.S.],” Zelensky said, adding that Ukrainians “can’t understand why” they would be asked to give up additional land.
“This is part of our country, all these citizens, the flag, the land,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky also blamed Russia for the conflict not being resolved already, despite President Trump singling out Zelensky as the roadblock to peace:

Before the start of today’s work of the delegations in Geneva, I held a meeting with the Ukrainian team.

Yesterday there were meetings in different formats – both bilateral between Ukraine and the United States and multilateral formats. In particular, there were talks between Ukrainian, American, and Russian representatives in two tracks – military and military-political issues. The Ukrainian delegation, together with the American team, also met with European representatives – from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. We consider Europe’s participation in the process indispensable for the successful implementation of entirely feasible agreements – Ukraine has no doubt that partners are capable of ensuring the constructiveness of the negotiation process and, therefore, a dignified result. Yesterday’s meetings were indeed difficult, and we can state that Russia is trying to drag out negotiations that could already have reached the final stage. I thank the American side for its attention to detail and patience in conversations with the current representatives of Russia.

I set a clear task for the Ukrainian delegation – to do everything possible so that the negotiations are nonetheless productive and increase the chances for peaceful solutions. Among other things, the humanitarian track is to be discussed today, namely steps for the exchange of prisoners of war and the release of civilians. I am grateful to our representatives for their teamwork and the implementation of the directives given to the delegation. Ukraine needs guaranteed security and a reliable, lasting peace. That is exactly what we are working for. Glory to Ukraine!

One of Zelensky’s major political allies, Vitaly Kim, urged the Dictator to choose people over land during an interview with The Independent on February 2.

“The land is important, but still, people are more important and the situation is that we do not know what will be tomorrow,” Kim said. “So for the Ukrainian people, I think the victory is just stopping the war and some guarantees of security for the future, for our children to have the life that we had before the invasion … I think for the majority of our people, the victory is to have their life like it was before the invasion. And it is very important for us because a lot of time has passed.”

On February 4 the two warring nations met in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. A prisoner of war swap was agreed to, but territory issues remained.

In December Zelensky had a different tune. He announced that a territory swap would be acceptable to him, assuming there was a vote. This vote was never held, likely at the behest of a Dictator who would prefer for those statements to be forgotten about in the fog of war.

“The Russians want the whole of Donbass – we don’t accept that. I believe that the Ukrainian people will answer this question. Whether in the form of elections or a referendum, the Ukrainian people must have a say,” Zelensky said in December.

Just days prior the Dictator shut the door on President Donald Trump’s peace plan by refusing territory swaps.

Trump’s peace plan was put forth in November and included territorial concessions, which would have brought the war to a close.

Following Zelensky’s White House visit on October 17 that failed to secure long-range missiles to escalate the war, the Dictator decided to remain defiant of peace, refuse to give up any territory to end the war, call for increased pressure on Russia instead of a truce, then proceed to lie that Kiev wants peace while Moscow doesn’t. This is not a new behavior however, Zelensky has a history of defiance.

Throughout 2025 Washington hosted events where it played the middleman between Moscow and Kiev, although any progress made during those meetings quickly vanished with European aid money to Ukraine.

In May the White House announced it wanted direct meetings between Moscow and Kiev, threatened to leave the negotiating table, but later began mediating the talks again. In June the two warring nations did manage bilateral meetings in Turkey, but those negotiations failed to bring about peace.

U.S. efforts climaxed in November when a Washington-drafted 28-point peace plan was attempted, but Ukraine refused the offer.
